Set the limit before, not after
A limit decided before a session is a decision; a limit decided during one is a negotiation, and the side doing the negotiating is not the one that set the limit. Deposit limits, loss limits and session timers exist on every licensed site in this field and they take about a minute to configure.
The useful version is an amount that can disappear without changing anything about the week. If no such amount exists, that is the answer rather than a smaller number.
The signs worth taking seriously
- Playing to recover a loss rather than because you wanted to play.
- Depositing more than the amount decided beforehand, more than once.
- Hiding the amount, the time or the fact of playing from someone close.
- Borrowing to play, in any form including a card balance carried deliberately.
- Relief rather than enjoyment when a session ends.
One of these on its own is worth noticing. Two together is worth acting on, and acting means a tool rather than a resolution.
The tools that actually exist
- Deposit and loss limits, set per day, week or month and usually slow to loosen by design.
- Session reminders, which interrupt time that has stopped being noticed.
- Cooling-off, a short break that locks the account for a fixed period.
- Self-exclusion, a long or permanent closure that a licensed operator is required to honour.
